At the Scandinavian Midsummer Festival, we will have 4 teams,
each representing their country (Island
excluded) compete against each other.
Our Kubb Tournament is
sponsored by Old
Time Games Inc. www.OldTimeGames.com
History:
Kubb
is a very old game whose origin
is uncertain though thought to
be French. Whether its beginning
was in France or it was the inventive
imagination of some young Scandinavian
children a millennium ago, we may
never know. But what is known is
that it was widely played over
1,000 years ago by the early Scandinavian
Vikings and has been played on
the Swedish island of Gotland and
in the southern part of Sweden
throughout the centuries where
it has persisted to this day.
Because of its name "Kubbspel" which
means throwing block game, one
can easily imagine how in the Viking
years it was perhaps a favorite
pastime of the young Scandinavian
children sent to collect firewood.
The rules are simple and open to
wide interpretation or variation
depending only on the skills, ages,
and imaginations of the participants.
While the game KUBB is centuries
old, the game Old Time Games Inc.
produce is called: KUBB
- The Viking Game™. It
gained national attention when
used in a TV episode of “Amazing
Race”, supplied by our friends
at Old Time Games Inc!
Rules for 2005 Scandinavian
Midsommar:
1. Playing Field
The
game is played on a field defined
by the four corner pins either
on a sandy beach or a level lawn.
The ten (10) Kubbs (throwing blocks)
are stood on end five (5) on each
team's baseline. Kubbs must have
least one Kubb length between each
other.

2. Objectives of Kubb
The
objective is for players standing
at their baseline first to topple
all five (5) Kubbs of the opposing
team by an underhand toss of the
six (6) throw pins (kastpinnar)
and to then topple the King (Kung)
which is placed in the center of
the playing field.
3. Who Starts?
To
decide which team starts, each
team gets to throw their pins as
close to the King as possible,
without touching or toppling him.
Closest wins, and starts.
4. Game Play
Each
team throws the six throw pins,
underhanded, to topple the other
team's Kubbs. Once a Kubb is toppled,
the opposing team gets to throw their
toppled Kubb onto the opponent's
field, past the centerline and beyond
the King. The team (whose Kubb was
toppled) must now topple their own
Kubb in the opponent's playing field,
before they can take aim for the
opponent's baseline Kubbs again.
If any of the opponent's baseline
Kubbs is toppled before the in-field
Kubbs are toppled, they are returned
to their upright position.
Once the team has toppled their
own Kubb in the opponent's playing
field, it is removed from the game.
First team to lose all their Kubbs,
loses.
